Location & Transportation
The Best Western Hotel Hebron is about a 6-minute walk from the main train station, Kobenhavn H, or about a 4-minute walk from the Kobenhavn H metro stop. Be aware that many of the sidewalks in this area are cobblestone so rolling a bag across them is always “fun”. My friends took the train from the airport directly to the main train station. As I was coming from the Fairfield, I took the M4/Blue metro train to the metro stop.
How This Stay Was Booked
We booked this stay directly through the Best Western website and chose to pay a slightly higher rate upon arrival so that we could each pay separately. This not only allowed us to each earn credit card points while paying, it was one less thing we’d have to worry about reimbursing someone for later on. Our rate was about $191/night for a room with two twin beds and a daybed.
Check-in
I had to check out of the Fairfield by 11 AM and my friends’ flight landed shortly thereafter. I arrived at the hotel between 10:30 and 11 AM. I didn’t expect the room to be ready and it was not but I was allowed to work in the courtyard and use the WiFi there while waiting for my friends to arrive. The room was finally ready about 1:30 PM, still well ahead of the published check-in time. We were able to split the payment for the two nights we had booked, which was nice. Trouble is, we’d miscalculated and really needed a third night! Unfortunately the hotel was booked and they didn’t have a room for us for our final night. While we put ourselves on the waiting list, later that night we booked another place, which I’ll review in the next installment.
Common Areas
On the ground floor there’s a courtyard that was a very pleasant place to sit. There were numerous tables and it was shaded by all four sides of the surrounding buildings so the temperature was quite pleasant. I enjoyed sitting here and working on the blog or doing email.
The front desk doubles as the bar and there’s also a small convenience store just to the right of the front desk.
Across from the front desk is a short stairway down. The first level is a small sitting area on one side and the other side has a computer so I guess it’s the business center.
Go down another small set of stairs and you’ll find the lounge. This area is below street level and was nice and cool. It was another handy place to work because electric outlets were available. This is where we did our research for a room for the third night of our stay in Copenhagen. There are also bathrooms here as well as a door that leads up to the courtyard.
Secured luggage check is available in the lobby, right beside the front door. While staff does not assist with storing your bags, it’s a surprisingly large room with large built-in shelves, perfect for accommodating different types of luggage.
Breakfast
The included breakfast was served in the restaurant on the level between the lobby and the first floor of guest rooms. It was a buffet and had quite a wide variety that all of us enjoyed. It is served 6:30-10:00 AM on week days and 7 AM – 10:30 AM on weekends.
One thing that was unusual about the elevator was that only the lobby/ground floor offered an UP button. So when leaving breakfast you either had to take the stairs one level down to the lobby or ride the elevator down and then back up. I don’t know if that’s supposed to keep folks from going to floors that are not their own – which would be ridiculous because there a grand staircase by the elevator – or what but it sure seemed weird!
Wi-Fi
The wi-fi here gets its own section of the review because the location of your room makes a big difference for your wi-fi experience. I had no trouble with the wi-fi in the courtyard but in our room on the third floor (which was four levels up from the lobby) we had virtually no connectivity. Our room was just off the elevator/staircase lobby area. I took my phone and walked slowly downstairs to see when I got a decent connection and I had to go down to the first floor of guest rooms – two floors above the lobby – to be able to get something I could use. That was quite frustrating. Looks like a signal booster would be something fairly cheap and easy.
Guest Room
Finding a room in Europe that can sleep three people in separate beds is not an easy feat but this one fit the bill. We were assigned room 334.
The bedding was fine but I was super-glad I’d thought to bring my own top sheet when we realized there was no air conditioning and all that was provided for cover were duvets. Our fault for not noticing the lack of A/C when we booked but still, for nearly $200/night you’d think that would be included! While a fan was provided, it was still quite warm in the room, even with the window wide open at night.
The electrical outlets were old and with some of them we had a hard time getting some of our plugs to seat properly in them, meaning we had to be careful our electronics were recharging. A safe was provided in the wardrobe though it was inoperable when we arrived. But good on the hotel for getting it fixed quickly with some new batteries.
In the bathroom the shower stall just had a curtain and only a combination shampoo/body wash, no conditioner. I think the people who design that set up must be folks who do not have long and/or frizzy hair because it sure is difficult to get tangles out when you can’t use conditioner! Fortunately one my friends brought her own conditioner and allowed us to share.
In the end
We had a hard time finding a room for 3 people, so our choices were limited. The location was very handy for access to the train and the metro. I’d be less concerned about staying here in cooler months than during the summer, if you’re like me and accustomed to being able to “sleep cool” at night. The wi-fi is an issue that was annoying though at least we could go downstairs for access when needed. They also allowed us to split the payment which we all appreciated. Still, if I could find a similar place with air conditioning and better wi-fi, I would certainly take a hard look at it before booking here again.
