Lodging Review: Passage Point Condo #427, Copper Mountain, Colorado

My final ski trip of the season was to Copper Mountain, Colorado. It was my first visit back to the resort since 2020, just before the pandemic. As was the case five years ago, when my ski club booked group lodging we were only allowed to book gold-, silver- or bronze-level lodging. Gold units are those closest to the slope. Our club chooses to book silver-level lodging. The last time we were at this resort all our units were in the Village Square condos or in Mountain Plaza. This time around most of our units were again in these two condo complexes, but we also had one unit in Silver Lake and our unit in Passage Point.

Shortly before the trip we were told which buildings our condos would be in, but not which units. When I checked the Center Village map I was at first a little disappointed we were “so far” away from everyone else. (Note that nothing is really that far away from anything in Center Village. It only feels like a long way if you’re walking in ski boots!) But it wasn’t too long before I decided we had the better end of the deal.

Check-in

Check-in still takes place at the Athletic Club, which is located between Center Village and East Village though it is across Copper Road (the main street through the resort). If you’re staying at a property managed by the resort, you’ll have access to the pool, hot tub and gym located in this building.

If you don’t have a car, you’ll probably want to take the free bus as it’s a long walk. Check-in was relatively quick as they had our packets made up for us already. There were just a few condos that were clean and fortunately ours was one of them.

If you don’t have your own vehicle see if you can leave your bags with the bell staff on the entrance level. They are very good with the porterage and will bring the bags to your unit.

Passage Point

The Passage Point complex is located right on Copper Road toward the west end of Center Village. It’s across the street from the Beeler Parking Lot and the Passage Point bus stop.

If you’re approaching from the American Eagle lift, take the path that’s straight ahead and on the left side, walking toward the covered bridge. Passage Point is the large building just on the other side of the bridge.

Common Areas

Ground Floor

When on the ground floor the complex seems to be comprised of two buildings but it’s actually a single building that’s got a large outdoor archway on the ground floor and is connected on the floors above. By sheer luck we happened to select the correct lobby when we first entered the building. We entered via the side door on the side of the buildings where the hot tubs and pool are located. Between that side door and the lobby is a hallway with the ski lockers (for that half of the building) and the fitness room. After passing those then you’ll enter the main lobby.

Lobby

The lobby has a comfortable seating area in front of a fireplace. There’s a counter with a sink beside it that could be used for serving refreshments. There’s also a door leading to a conference room but I don’t know how big that room is as I never saw the door open. The short hallway to the hot tubs and pool leads directly off the lobby as well.

There’s a stairway up to the second floor – but that’s as far as it goes!

If you’re taking a shuttle or using a ride share, the front door to the lobby is under a large covering and there are only about 3-4 steps, so it’s not too difficult to get your luggage through. They don’t seem to shovel this area however, and my roommate slipped on the ice on our final day there.

Hot Tubs and Pool

There are two hot tubs and a heated pool on this property. The smaller hot tub is the hottest while the larger one is considered to be cooler, although it was still very warm during our stay. The pool is larger than the hot tubs but is just warm by comparison.

Fitness Room

The fitness room is quite wide but not very deep. It faces the hot tubs and contains a few cardio machines, a universal machine and some hand weights.

Ski Locker Room

I didn’t take photos of the ski locker room because, well, it’s just a bunch of tall metal lockers, not very exciting. The numbering system makes absolutely no sense, so just wander around until you find the locker for your unit. All the units have keyed locks and the keys are hanging near the door in your condo. I was pleased to see that there were plenty of keys provided. Sometimes resorts can get stingy with the keys but not here. I would assume that if you were to lose a key that there would be a fee involved. The lockers can theoretically hold 4 pairs of skis but it would be a tight fit. With our unit, the second bedroom was actually a lock-off hotel room with its own entrance, so we had two lockers we could use. Pro tip: there’s an exit from the locker room right to the outside. It took me half the week to notice it! That was super-handy when coming back from the slopes as it meant one less door to navigate with my hands full of ski equipment.

Second Floor

Guest Laundry

The second floor had a large, clean laundry room with six sets of washers and dryers. You pay for the laundry using an app: $2.25 for a washer and $2.00 for a dryer. If you need detergent, fabric softener, etc. these are available in a vending machine in the room.

Trash Room

There’s a trash room on each floor, right by the elevator lobby. Items to be recycled go in the blue bins while trash goes in the chute.

Two Bedroom Condo

Our unit was on the fourth floor, right next to the elevator lobby. Opening the front door you step into a hallway with a closet straight ahead. It has a tray on the floor for wet ski boots but is only large enough to hold two pair.

Turning right the hall curves past a large wall-mounted unit that can be used for drying boots, gloves or whatever needs to be dried. The hall then continues past a bathroom into the combined living area/kitchen/dining area.

The living room had an enormous sectional sofa that could easily seat six people or more. I ended up sleeping on it when my roommate got sick and didn’t even use half of it. I would imagine part of it is a sleeper sofa but I did not check.

There’s a large flat screen TV mounted over the fireplace and a small desk next to that.

The dining table was rustic but I liked it. I wasn’t as crazy about the bench seats on the long sides but I have to admit they were super-handy to use as a place to put on my ski boots each morning. The unit had a small balcony that overlooked the Passage Point bus stop and the interstate. Some reviews I’ve read state that during the summer the traffic noise can be pretty bad because there’s no air conditioning so the windows need to be open. Of course open windows was not an issue during our stay so any traffic noise was not a problem for us.

The kitchen wasn’t huge – three people was definitely a crowd in there – but it was functional and pretty well-equipped. All the appliances worked just fine though I’m told the coffee maker was unlike any my roommates had ever seen before.

The master bedroom was just off the living room and had a king-sized bed.

The room also had two night stands, a chest, a chair and a bench. There were no drawers other than the two tiny drawers in the night stands.

The closet was large and had sliding mirrored doors.

There was no en suite master bath; instead it was in the hallway. Very basic and identical to the bathroom in the other bedroom.

Turning left from the front door is the door to the other bedroom. This bedroom could actually be sold separately as a lock-off hotel room from the rest of the condo. A door on each side of the doorway allowed the room to be locked off. This room also had its own entrance from the hallway, although we did not use it. It was separately numbered as room 427A, and we had our own ski locker with three sets of keys.

The room had a queen bed, a set of twin-sized bunk beds and a sleeper sofa.

Once again there were no drawers except for the tiny ones in the night stands. The closet was mirrored and had the extra bedding for the sleeper sofa stored there as well as a fan.

I found the organization of the room a little strange. There was a rectangle picture on the wall that was half-hidden by the bunk bed yet a much smaller picture over the sofa. The furniture was a little worn as seen on the bunk bed. The ladder to the upper bunk only had one hook to hold it in place, so I was glad we were not using that bed. Well, except as a shelf as that’s where I ended up putting most of the clothes that did not hang. It’s hard to see in the photo above but there was a 2-shelved glass table as part of the TV stand so I used that as well.

Some of the furniture had seen some wear

Not photographed is the coffee maker on a small table and the mini-fridge that were on the other side of the closet.

The bathroom was basic but functional. On the left side was the counter and toilet. It had a wall-mounted hair dryer that worked fine for my short hair but those with longer and/or thicker hair may find it not powerful enough. There was also a hand towel and a make-up towel.  As you can see, it’s identical to the hall bath, which is not a bad thing.

The main towel rack was on the back wall between the toilet and the shower/tub. Extra towels and wash cloths were under the sink. No hot tub towels are provided on site so bring one from your room. The shower/tub was across from the toilet. Wall-mounted toiletries were provided. The bottles just had the Copper Mountain logo on them so I have no idea what was in them. But there were separate containers for body wash, shampoo and conditioner. The plate around the water controls was a little loose, and combined with the condition of some of the furniture, gave the impression that the room could use a little love.

In the end

Despite the lack of drawers in the bedroom I really liked this place. It was much nicer and larger than the Village Square units. And really, the choice of furniture is up to the owners so if you are assigned a different unit you may have a totally different experience. It’s so convenient to both the slopes and the bus stop that I would be very happy to stay here again on my next visit.
