2024: The Year in Travel

As each year draws to a close I like to take a look back at my trips over the past twelve months.  I did not have any work travel this year (and am not sure I ever will again thanks to Zoom & WebEx!) so my travel patterns were very normal for me.

Here’s how my travel looked on the map:

My 2024 Flights – made with gcmap.com

First up was a ski trip to Park City, Utah in January where I tested out my knee after taking most of last ski season off when I injured it in October 2023.  I flew in a day ahead of my ski club and spent the night at the Hyatt Place Salt Lake City Airport so I could have dinner with friends.  We stayed at the Snow Flower Condos, right at the base of Park City Resort.

I took a trip in early February to Crested Butte, Colorado for a long ski weekend with my Denver-based family.  We stayed in the Emmons Condos right at the base.  The location was fantastic but the lack of an elevator (and the uncooperative door lock!) were downers.  Still, the price was good enough that we’re returning there in just a few weeks.  As my family drove back to Denver they dropped me off in Gunnison for the night where I stayed at the EconoLodge Gunnison (that is now a Quality Inn).

My final ski trip was in late February.  I flew to Denver a day ahead of my club and met up with a co-worker who drove up from Colorado Springs.  It was the first time we’d met in person, so it was nice to spend some time together away from work.  We spent the night at the avid Hotel Denver Airport, an IHG property that practically had a “new hotel” smell to it.  I then rode with my ski club up to Breckenridge where we spent a week at the Beaver Run Resort, a huge hotel complex right next to the ski resort.

My final trip of the year was the big international one to Scandinavia.  I traveled to 2 new-to-me countries and I got to fly Finnair for the first time and transited the Helsinki airport on my way to Copenhagen.  There I spent a night at the Fairfield by Marriott Nordhavn.

And followed that up with two nights at the Best Western Hotel Hebron

When we found ourselves one night short on our hotel reservations we were able to snag a private room at the Next House hostel:

Then we took the train to Malmö, Sweden where we spent a couple of nights at the Story Hotel Studio Malmö, a Hyatt property.

At the halfway point of our trip we stayed for one night at the IKEA Hotell

Then we boarded the high-speed train to Stockholm where we spent three nights at the Motel L Älvsjö

We flew SAS Airlines from Stockholm to Oslo, where we rounded out our trip at the Comfort Hotel Grand Central

It was a great two-week trip and if you missed the trip report you can find the first installment HERE or find the last installment, which has an index to all the other posts,  HERE.

Countries Visited

This latest international trip brought my Number of Countries Visited total to 32.  That sounds like a lot to some folks but when plotted out is really not so much.  I mean, I have three whole continents I’ve yet to visit!

In the end

Another wonderful year of travel.  I’m so blessed to be able to visit both places I love and places I’ve never been.  Next up: the ski trips start in January and the 2025 international trip starts with a few days in Krakow, Poland followed by a river cruise from Budapest to Bucharest (see the link at the top of the page if you’d like to join us).
