Valdez was the prettiest port on our cruise. When we arrived, the ship couldn’t even send any tenders out because the fog (or cloud) was so thick. But once the fog burned off, oh my goodness, was it gorgeous. My photos don’t do it justice.

We didn’t take an excursion here, just walked around the town, stopped for a coffee, and later for lunch.

Mostly we were in awe of the scenery. We learned that several of the businesses were closed during our visit on a Saturday because the owners had gone fishing! And we saw lots of people fishing around the harbor.

This is Indian Statue #20 by Peter “Wolf” Toth, part of the Trail of the Whispering Giants. There are more than 70 of these, one in each US state as well as in Canada and Hungary. It’s 30 feet high, 10 feet wide and weighs 85,000 pounds (42.5 tons!).

Like everywhere we went in Alaska, there were lots of boats, both in and out of the water.

In the end

Valdez is not large. While we’d hoped to see at least some eagles during our visit we did not see any wildlife. During our Saturday visit a number of businesses were closed because the owners had gone fishing, which was a bit of a surprise with a cruise ship in port. But my goodness was it beautiful.
