Location
The hotel is super-convenient to the Malmö Train Station. If you come up through the main part of the train station and exit, keep the station behind you and you’ll be facing north. Turn left and walk across a bridge over a canal. Turn right and walk beside the canal (it’s a pedestrian area) and walk until you reach the next street. The Story Hotel is on your left! Once you’re familiar with the area, as you’re heading from the hotel back to the train station you can use the entrance that goes under the street that bridges the canal and enter that way.
How This Stay Was Booked
The Story Hotel is a category 1 Hyatt, which meant I was able to book one night using the free night certificate I get with the Chase World of Hyatt Visa. There were no rooms that allowed for three adults, but it was so cheap that I was fine spending 5000 points per night for two rooms. So total cost was 15K points + one free night certificate for two rooms where the refundable rate was $259/night though I could get a corporate discount for $233/night. If I value Hyatt points at 1.5 cents each, it means we got each of the rooms for $75 per night which is quite a bargain!
Check-in
We arrived well before normal check-in time as we were desperate to leave the Next House. It was very quiet when we arrived and the staff was willing to store our bags in what appeared to be an unused meeting room. At least it was locked up. My basic Discoverist status was recognized and we were given a drink coupon for each room.
On the ground floor was a cafe that seemed to be open maybe only for breakfast and lunch. I’m not sure it’s actually affiliated with the hotel as it is not on their website. There is a gym but we were so busy while in Malmö that I did not even think to go take photos.
The elevator lobby on our floor was quite large with a huge picture window.
Guest Room
Our rooms were not together although they were on the same floor, which was helpful. The hotel has quite an industrial look throughout the lobby and the guest rooms. I loved the gorgeous wood floors in the room. The ceiling had exposed beams and ductwork.
One friend and I had a twin room. Our Hyatt duck had a nice view of appears to be a fairly industrial section of the city.
We had a table and a single chair in the corner. The lap desk provided at the end of my bed lived on that table during our stay.
The flat-screen TV was nice but we turned it off when we arrived and never turned it back on.
This phone was on my friend’s bedside table and had an annoying habit of lighting up for no apparent reason. She ended up turning it face down overnight just so it wouldn’t disturb her sleep.
There was an easily-accessible electrical outlet on each side of the bed but no USB outlet.
On the right side of the room were a couple of hanging racks as well as this shelving unit. The mini-fridge was empty but there was a safe, which is always appreciated. Coffee and tea setups occupied the second shelf and the hair dryer was on top.
The shower setup here was just really not good. It would be one thing if that partially curved glass was affixed to the floor, but it wasn’t. It could move a little and that just let water seep underneath. It would have been so nice if there was just a tiny step-down into the shower and the floor was tilted just a tiny bit toward the drain in the corner.
There was no counter space around the sink but the little stand next to it was large enough for my toiletry kit, while my friend was able to hang hers on one of the town racks.
Toiletries were by Grown Alchemist and we did get separate shampoo, conditioner and body wash, something I no longer take for granted.
The birthday girl got her own king room and was actually given a corner room with windows on two sides. She was thrilled and enjoyed having her own space for a couple of nights.
I found our room rather stuffy and couldn’t figure out the thermostat. When I checked at the front desk the woman basically said that it was non-functional but offered to bring up a fan. True to her word, there was a fan in our room when we returned from dinner the first night.
Restaurant
Kasai in the Sky is the Japanese-themed restaurant on the top floor. It has both indoor and outdoor seating and is where the complimentary breakfast is served. On our second morning there a tour group had come in the night before and the restaurant was quite busy. While the temperatures were quite warm in the afternoons, it was a bit cool and breezy to eat outdoors that morning but we had no choice. Breakfast is buffet style though I believe you can order some things at the counter. I had no need so didn’t investigate.
In the end
This hotel is a bargain on points and is a great place to stay if you want to explore Malmö. It’s not a long train ride into Copenhagen so you could even use it as a base to explore that city if you wish.
