Bonus Starpoints for SPG Amex Cardholders

Today I received an interesting email from Starwood.  By enrolling in their latest promotion I can earn 5,000 bonus Starpoints if I spend $5000 on my SPG American Express between now and the end of the year.  This is a no-brainer for me.  I make sure I put enough spend on my SPG card each year to maintain Gold status with them so I should easily reach this goal by the end of the year, even with time off for vacation and holidays.

Here is the email I received:

I clicked on the Enroll Now button and was taken to a screen on the Amex website where I could choose to log in with either my Amex or my SPG credentials.  At that point I was taken to the enrollment screen:

I entered my email address, clicked the check box and then clicked the Enroll button.  It seemed to take quite a while but eventually I received this screen:

Starpoints are a super-valuable transferable currency in addition to being terrific for SPG hotel stays.  Now that Starwood and Marriott are merging Starpoints can be transferred to Marriott Rewards at a rate of 1 SPG to 3 Marriott.  So if you find yourself short of points for a Marriott award, you can easily top off your account this way.

Of course Starpoints are also valuable as they have the most airline transfer partners of any transferrable currency and when you transfer 20K points to an airline at one time you get 5K bonus miles from most airlines.  For example, transfer 20K Starpoints to American Airlines and your AA balance will soon reflect the addition of 25K miles!  Can’t beat that.

So if you are an SPG Amex cardholder keep your eyes peeled for this email.  You MUST register before any of your purchases will count towards your $5000 spend so be sure to sign up right away.
