Lodging Review: Hyatt House Denver Airport

(credit: hyatt.com)

I stayed at the Hyatt House Denver Airport for one night ahead of a ski trip. It happened to be the weekend the severe snow and ice hit much of the eastern US so there were a lot of canceled flights and the hotel was quite busy.

Arrival

The hotel shuttle leaves the airport every 30 minutes at :15 and :45 after the hour. It departs the hotel at the top and bottom of each hour. It’s not a 24-hour service but I think the first hotel departure is in the 3 AM hour. The instructions I’d received via email say to wait on Island 3 outside door 512 on the baggage claim level but at least for right now there is no door 512 as there’s construction in that area. So just leave via door 510 or 514 and you’ll be fine. These even-numbered doors are on the United side of baggage claim so if you flew in on another airline you’ll likely need to cross to the other side of the building. Continue reading

2025: The Year in Travel

This year’s travel was fairly standard though I did have an extra segment on Southwest, an airline I hadn’t flown in years.

January

2025 opened up with my 4th-annual long weekend to Crested Butte to ski with my Denver-based family. I flew United Airlines into Gunnison, Colorado on a Thursday. On the Sunday night I once again stayed at the Quality Inn in Gunnison (which had been re-branded from an Econo Lodge) where I hibernated for one night, trying to fight off what I later learned was the flu, before boarding the plane home on Monday morning. My apologies to the folks on the plane.

Less than a week later it was off to my favorite ski resort, Big Sky, Montana, where I flew United into Bozeman. Still fighting sickness I only got to ski about the last 3 days. That wasn’t all bad as it was extremely cold the first few days we were there. Our ski club stayed slopeside at the Huntley Lodge. I flew United via Denver but got rerouted via Houston on the way home.

My 2025 domestic travel. The line between Memphis and Denver should be 3 colors!

Fireworks over the Sydney Opera House on a random October night in 2015. Happy New Year’s Eve Eve!

I don’t usually post the same subject matter in the same year much less the same month but this seemed like a good photo to round out the year.

Activate 1st Quarter Bonus Categories

It’s time to activate bonus categories for card that have quarterly bonuses for next quarter.  All of these cards offer bonus points or cash back on up to $1500 in purchases during the quarter.

US Bank Cash+

If you’re not already getting 5x Ultimate Rewards points by using a Chase Ink card (and even if you are!) you may want to switch the card you’re using for payment for TV/Internet/Streaming Services and Cell Phones.  You must register your card before December 15th to get the bonus cash-back in the categories you select.  As a reminder, you choose two 5% categories and one 2% category.  I’ll stick with Home Utilities and Gyms for this quarter.  I’ll pick Grocery Stores for the 2% category just to pick something but wouldn’t use this card at a grocery as I get a better return with my Discover Card for Q1.

Discover Card

Discover’s Q1 categories are Grocery Stores, Wholesale Clubs and Select Streaming Services.  I’ll switch my grocery store spending for sure but for now I’m getting over 25% off my Peacock Premium Plus subscription by paying with my Barclays Hawaiian Airlines card which gives me $5 off each bill, so that’s definitely a better deal.

To activate the bonus, simply log into your Discover account and click on the Activate Now button or look for the email where you can register in one click.

Chase Freedom and Freedom Flex

The Chase Freedom and Freedom Flex card categories are Norwegian Cruise Lines, Dining, and the American Heart Association.  If I had an NCL trip upcoming I’d use this in a heartbeat.  I’m also glad to see a charity on here though would appreciate a broader range of charities.  But the dining I will definitely make use of!

Activate these changes by visiting the Chase registration site by December 14.

In the end

Always register for the bonus categories even if you don’t think you’re going to use them.  You’ll never know when they might come in handy!
